The 33 year old American Serena Williams has beaten World No. 2 Maria Sharapova to win her sixth Australian Open tennis title in Melbourne today. Serena is currently the number one ranked women’s tennis player in the world and was able to easily beat her opponent, Maria in straight sets 6-3, 7-6 to claim her 19th Grand Slam title of her career.

She now needs just three more Grand Slam titles to equal Steffi Graf’s record of winning a whopping 22 Grand Slam titles in her career. Will Serena be able to achieve this is anybody’s guess at the moment as age is really catching up on her. If Serena is match fit and can extend her career into one more year, then she could possibly beat the 22 Grand Slam all-time title record set by Steffi Graf.

There is one more record that Serena was able to create during the first grand slam event of this calendar year. Serena has now won 16 matches consecutively against Maria Sharapova and Serene is a thorn in the flesh for Maria.

Both the ladies are real hard hitters of the tennis ball and the game featured plenty of powerful forehand and backhand winners from both players. Serena has been playing the entire fortnight of Australian Open Grand Slam with a throat infection and hacking cough and there were glimpses of the hacking cough troubling her during the match. She was also huffing and puffing during points. But, Sharapova had no answer to Serena’s powerful serves and despite her fighting instincts, she was not able to take the game to the third set.

Serena Williams is also the oldest champion in the Australian Open era and her record in grand Slam open finals has been an impressive 19 wins to just 4 losses, which is the best percentage as far as both women’s and men’s tennis game is concerned.

Serena received the Daphne Akhurst trophy from none other tennis legend Martina Navratilova, whose record of 18 Grand Slam career titles was overtaken by Williams today. Serena said that she was happy with the way the final was fought and was happy that Maria gave her best shot. She said that she never thought that she would be standing at Melbourne Park holding her 19th Grand Slam title and this win really meant a lot to her.
